CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS

The National Future Physicians Forum returns! Following a successful inaugural year, we look forward to bringing a one-day conference designed exclusively for first-year medical students. Our goal: Create a scaffolding that will support the rest of your medical school learning journey. Get a grounding of what you will be exploring in years to come. Network with physicians and preceptors, meet fellow students, and feel how a future would be like in a place that does great medicine.  Here's what you can look forward to from our FREE conference:

1. THE ANATOMY OF MEDICINE & THE HOSPITAL

It will be a few years before you step onto the wards. In this conference, you will be oriented to how the hospital works from ER to the OR. The goal of this conference is to give you a taste of what you can expect in the years to come of your medical degree.

2. MAKING IT THROUGH MED SCHOOL ALIVE

Let's not sugar coat it; med school is tough... Meet Family Practice Residents who were in your shoes just a few years ago and ask them for tips. Additionally, some of our doctors serve as preceptors and will share how they evaluate and assess students.

3. PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES

Meet experts in the fields you are interested in, both students and professionals, all within a non-evaluative and relaxed setting (casual attire recommended!)

4. MADE BY PHYSICIANS, FOR YOU

Workshops and opportunities are all developed and planned by a team of physician teachers and family practice residents who have been through the system and have valuable experience to share. Our goal is to get you excited about your future life as a doctor, and walk you through some of the most fundamental parts of our medical system's operations.

OK, BUT WHAT ARE THE WORKSHOPS ACTUALLY ABOUT?

Here are some examples of what you can expect to learn (tangibly) at NFPF. We are excited to launch additional workshops "session rotations" based on feedback from our 2024 cohort!

INTRO TO THE OR:

You've seen the OR in shows but have you actually been in one yet? You will get your first exposure in the OR—but wait, you'll have to scrub in first! Learn the importance of sterility, feel what it is like to intubate (hands on experience), and understand the basics of how the operating room functions. You will no longer have to imagine what happens in the OR when you go through your first few years of med school.

JOURNEY OF A BIOPSY:

Over the next few years in medical school, you will learn how to make a diagnosis. Somehow, you will get to the point of finding a tumor and diagnosing a cancer. But what are the steps in between?

Here, you will take a tour into the Pathology lab. For some of you, this may be the only time in your career you will ever do so—but, so much of what you will do in medicine depends on this crucial step. This session has been highly rated and brought back by popular demand (#pathocool).

TAKE YOUR FIRST HISTORY IN THE SIM LAB

Learn to take your first history in the SIM lab! The first time you go into the ER is overwhelming. Let us orient you to the scene and learn the basics so it won't be as scary. Get a practical foundation for you to build upon your learning in the next few years.

WHERE AND WHY ABBOTSFORD?

You will soon learn that as a medical student, getting exposed is teaching, and patients is everything! It is difficult to get this in the large teaching hospitals.

Set 70km away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, Abbotsford is nestled in the heart of the Fraser Valley, on the traditional and unceded territories of the Stó:lō people, the Semá:th First Nation and Mathxwí First Nation. Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre is a regional hub and level 3 trauma centre with modern facilities and a great team.

A sneak peek of some of the fun things we got up to in 2024.
